Self-Respect

What is affected when we respect ourselves?

It's one of the most important aspects of life.

  • Self-respect takes lead in our reputation, interactions, our relationships/who we attract, careers, our roles as parents, self-fulfillment..

  • Belief in your value and abilities support quality substance within your days (and where they lead!)

Easier said than done. Correct? You're not alone there.

The base of Self-Respect!

We are our own worst critic. That little voice has been influenced directly and indirectly by anything and everyone we've come in contact with.

You may find your inner voice replaying hurtful words and worries. Or maybe the pendulum swings too far the other way making you act over-confident, without much connection or concentration towards others.

As hard as it might be: Admitting the need for change, is the first step. Thinking on it honestly, is the second.  Your approach depends on what blocks your desire for, or recognition of your healthy self-respect.

Self-Respect comes from inside you. You own it.
It isn't decided on by others, no matter how they treat you.

List or discover your positive qualities. Entertaining the idea of helping yourself; of discovering this exciting journey - displays a bright mind (if you were sitting there thinking you didn't have any qualities ;)

It's hard sometimes to see past years of abuse, negative influence, neglect, or other hindering environments. If you didn't catch the example I gave on the "problem solving" page:

Change!

Cross your arms however you normally do. Natural, comfortable, hmm? Now cross them the other way. Not as natural? If you were to do it daily, it becomes natural. Same goes for whatever you need to learn, to shape your days into how you rather live!

When you dip your toe into various pools (hobbies, interests, education, passions...) you get a feel for what all bring out your energy and satisfaction. Maybe it starts as a tingle, and you have to investigate further to see if it's part of you? There could be so much inside that you didn't realize was waiting to come to the surface. Can it be frustrating? At first, it might be, but don't give up.

I like to remind myself:
There are people, places and opportunities coming, that I don't know exist yet.
Which means, tomorrow is totally unknown. You can't see around the corner. If you change up your routine (or not), you still have the chance of pivotal happenings.

Please remember:

Everyone on this planet has the right to their life. To chances, even if they've made mistakes. So long as you're not out to hurt others (present or future tense), you have no reason to hang your head at this time. If you have hurt others in the past? Make amends, or move forward as best you can. Talking to someone may also be of help (if one person/therapist isn't clicking with you, try another. They aren't all the same) If you have done something such-as murder or accidental loss of life, of course that is major. You can't undo it. You can however, help others - volunteer, educate others to know how your situation evolved, try to balance what bad has happened, with good. If nothing else, move forward with no plans to harm again. Get help should you feel the urge.

Respect yourself, in your reasonings. Your actions showcase what you are aware of. Some people unknowingly live in a bubble where they justify their choices, thinking their justification emanates through the world - the justification really only works in their bubble. The rest of the world see's what is really going on. Therefore, you are not respecting yourself. In reality, you appear ignorant. That doesn't have to be. Quote frankly, the further you've had to rise up, the more amazing you are. Never think you're not worth trying and changing.
